Reading between the Co-Ops

Plant It Planet formed as a group of disparate people from all over the Philadelphia area who were concerned about Chester’s status as a food desert and were interested in using people power and agriculture to fix it. Anyone was invited to participate. Over time, they wanted to grow their impact but felt that both a nonprofit or for profit business model would be too top-down to be appropriate for a service designed to serve all of Chester. Then they heard about Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance’s “20 Book Clubs → 20 Cooperative Businesses” program.

Under this program, which kicked off this week, 20 groups of Philadelphians with an idea for a cooperatively-owned business to fill a need in their community will meet twice a month to read books and articles and watch documentaries and more on how to make their plan a reality.
