Park Slope Food Co-op inspires Brooklyn copycats

More than a dozen people packed inside a 700-square-foot corner store in central Brooklyn early on a recent afternoon. Some arrived with babies in strollers, others just with carts. But all had come for the same reason—to load up on fresh produce and dairy products at the area's newest food phenomenon, the Windsor Terrace Food Co-op on Caton Avenue and East 8th Street.

"This neighborhood was like a food desert," said Lindsey Jones, a dancer who lives a few blocks away from the new shop. She previously bought her groceries 11 miles away, at Trader Joe's on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, and schlepped them back home on the F train. "When I heard about the co-op, I got so excited that I signed up right away."
