Spirit of Occupy lives on in new super-collective

There's a place in Oakland where citizen scientists are working to perfect vegan cheese, hackers are designing a low-cost community Internet service and former Occupiers are taking another stab at changing the world.

Envisioned as a public space where artists, techies and political lefties can share ideas and expertise, Omni Commons is perhaps among the most improbable endeavors underway in the Bay Area today.

At a time when skyrocketing rents and land values are making sections of Oakland decidedly less funky, several veterans of the Occupy movement last year leased -- with an option to buy -- a former Italian-American social hall and concert venue situated on the edge of one of the city's most desirable commercial districts.
