Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba Leaves Behind Legacy of a Lifetime

He spent just under eight months as mayor of Mississippi’s largest city, but Chokwe Lumumba left behind the legacy of a lifetime.

Lumumba had his share of polarizing moments for some local residents, but the first-term mayor invested in his beloved adopted city of Jackson long before taking over as mayor.

A civil rights activist, Lumumba was also an accomplished lawyer, whose list of high-profile clients included the late rapper Tupac Shakur, Black Panther Assata Shakur and the Scott sisters.

He served on the City Council, vacating the seat in his first term when he decided to run for mayor. That campaign drew national attention
