Catalyzing worker co-ops & the solidarity economy

Conflict Resolution Workshop / City Procurement: NYC NoWC

Dear Coop Community,

Since we began our membership listening tour, the need for conflict resolution training has been something we have heard on multiple occasions. For this reason, we are excited to share a great training opportunity for New York City worker-owners:

NYCNoWC is hosting its first Conflict Resolution Workshop designed specifically for Worker-Cooperatives!

What:
Resolutions Not Ruins: Conflict Resolution In Your Co-op
When:
Saturday, May 21st, 12:00pm - 5:00pm (English and Español)
Where:
Meerkat Media Collective
225 42nd St #310
Brooklyn, New York 11232

Free Registration Here
Childcare will be available

As in all communities, conflict in cooperatives is unavoidable. It is also uncomfortable. In working through conflict, the question shouldn’t be, “How do we prevent conflict?” but rather “How do we address conflict in ways that are healthy and build a stronger organization?” This interactive and practice-based workshop will help you build communication skills for use in mediating conflict for others, as well as navigating conflict as a participant. In addition, we will share approaches and strategies for conflict resolution, and tips on creating conflict resolution tools and policies that are a fit for your co-op.

Lunch will be provided at 12pm
A small reception will proceed the workshop

About the facilitator: Kiran Nigam

For over 15 years Kiran has made a life and a living helping people talk to each other about topics that are often uncomfortable, awkward, or taboo, grounded in a politics of liberation, and love.

She has an academic background in brains, neuroscience, education, and art that she finds informs her facilitation on a daily basis. Complementary to her work with AORTA, she makes potions, draws, cooks, and studies nutrition, food, plants, and meditation as medicine, and knows a fair amount about bodies. She has increasingly been integrating these skills and areas of study into her facilitation: utilizing visuals to map information and maximize group effectiveness, integrating space for reflection and
introspection in workshops, centering her work in love and compassion, using body-based tools to support learning and ease group decision-making, and in general welcoming our whole, messy selves into political work.

After 15 years of involvement in the cooperative economics movement, she has developed a particular passion for working with cooperatives and democratically-run groups, as well as supporting hierarchical groups transitioning to horizontal structures.

About AORTA

AORTA is a worker-owned cooperative devoted to strengthening movements for social justice and a solidarity economy. We work as consultants and facilitators to expand the capacity of cooperative, collective, and community based projects through education, training, and planning. We base our work on an intersectional approach to liberation because we believe that true change requires uprooting all systems of oppression.
