Casa Nueva celebrates 30 years with event

Casa Nueva is getting ready to celebrate. After being closed for a couple of days, Casa reopens today (Aug. 6) and is planning an anniversary bash on Saturday.

Casa will host a party to mark 30 years of operation as a worker-owned cooperative. Food and entertainment will be provided throughout the afternoon and evening at the restaurant at 6 W. State St. in Athens.

Casa Nueva (or “new house”) was started in the spring of 1985 by a group of eight unemployed restaurant workers who decided to form a worker-owned cooperative. They were assisted by ACEnet, which formed at about the same time to promote community-based economic development in the region.

“Thirty years ago when Casa was born, it was because the eight original founders were unwilling to give up on each other or their community,” said restaurant treasurer Stephanie Katterhenrich. “The secret to Casa's success is our cooperative love – as true today as it was then, and why we survive and thrive.”
