South-By-Southwest is  a huge convention that had an interesting forum on Tech-shop co-ops. The audio is available, at the linked location, for you to listen to the session.

One of the worker-owners of Quilted, who recently did a project for GEO (and did a SUPER job), was on the panel. It is a very comforting introductory session. It answers many of the usual questions people have. The participants were mostly in Web development shops so it is quite heavy on those technical considerations but is really reassuring for someone thinking about starting or joining if they lean toward cooperation.
